(JakGlobe) Govt to Form Special Team to Rule on Golkar Leadership Battle
A special task force will be formed to examine which faction of the Golkar Party, currently split over a leadership dispute, will be officially recognized in the House of Representatives (DPR), the government says.
Both Aburizal Bakrie and Agung Laksono claim to be Golkar chairman after rival congresses in Bali and Jakarta last week installed them as party leader. The dispute has left Justice and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly in an awkward spot, as he must now must decide which faction will be officially recognized.
Bakrie, who was declared to have obtained 100 percent of votes after all his challengers dropped out of the running at a congress in Bali on Dec. 3, had already registered his new party lineup by 8 a.m. on Monday. Bakrie said he was “optimistic” his faction would be declared legitimate because it was based on “congress procedure.”
Yasonna confirmed he had received the paperwork, but said he would need time to make his decision.
“As now there are disputes I have to form a special team … I will make a team [consisting] of the directorate general of law administration and my special staff to analyze the information.”
Agung, who was appointed as rival party chairman in Jakarta on Sunday, has yet to file a request for verification to the ministry, according to Yasonna.
The minister said there would be no bias towards either side.
“As the government we cannot be discriminative in deciding which one is the right one. We will see the documents first,” Yasonna said.
Yasonna found himself in a similar position just a week after taking up his ministerial role in October. Supporters loyal to former United Democratic Party (PPP) chief and corruption suspect Suryadharma Ali filed a lawsuit against the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights over the government’s recognition of a party vote which bade farewell to Suryadharma’s leadership of the Islamic party. That party conflict is still ongoing.
