(Jakarta Post) Response, Protest: Alcohol-ban and Visa on Arrival dillemma
All the reasons given and published by the media for prohibiting alcoholic beverages are absolutely ridiculous.
The government should forbid oplosan (bootleg liquor), which is an illegal alcoholic concoction of spirits mixed with dangerous substances consumed by the lower classes and which has resulted in numerous deaths including the deaths of tourists in Bali and Lombok.
Indonesians have consumed beer for many generations without any negative effects. To prohibit it now is laughable.
That children do not listen to their parents is not due to alcohol consumption but to a lack of attention and poor upbringing by their parents.
To blame alcohol is so ignorant. A glass of beer for instance is nutrition-wise the same as the consumption of one
sandwich.
A glass of wine before a meal is known to lower cholesterol levels as it contains anti oxidants, it is much better than
medicine.
Another reason to forbid alcohol consumption is due to religious beliefs. A group of people in this country are hypocrites.
Muslims countries like Turkey, Algeria, Jordan, Tunisia and Lebanon are known to be producers and consumers of wine.
Algeria for instance produces a red wine that is much better than many brands of French red wine.
Turkey produces excellent wines, I know because I have lived there. Let us discuss the wines of Bali especially its rose, which is excellent.
I am not sure if the Balinese will welcome the prohibition of alcoholic beverages. They will see a significant decrease in tourist arrivals, which will harm their economy.
Indonesia wants to increase the number of tourists, if alcoholic beverages are prohibited in Indonesia, tourists will certainly avoid visiting this country and go to neighboring Muslim countries that do not have ridiculous laws.
If the government goes ahead with this law, they should also scrap the Visa on Arrival issued to European, Latin American and tourists of many other countries, these people are used to drinking alcoholic beverages especially beer.
